Hello, today I will be talking about the evolution of video game consoles and how we went fromThe photo on the left to the photo on the right. Video game consoles can be broken into five generations dating from 1972 all the way to today in 2021. To start things off we will go way back in time to 1972 back to the release of the Magnavox odyssey. The Magnavox odyssey was the first ever released home video game console it even predates pong which didn’t release until 1975. for those who don’t know palm is probably the most notable old game and to some people they even believe it is the first to ever exist it is a very basic game consisting of two paddles and a ball that plays like ping pong where you must block the ball from crossing your side. and jump to the color TV game. This console was released in Japan in 1977 and was the first system the now extremely famous company Nintendo ever produced. We can then move to the second generation of consoles starting off with the most popular console from this generation the Atari 2600. The Atari 2600 was released in 1977 in North America however it was also released in Europe in 1978 as well as in Japan in 1983. This is the beginning of consoles that take game cartridges in which a plastic cartridge is placed into a slot in the console in which all the data for the game is contained. Another notable console releases the second generation were the Magnavox odyssey 2 which released in the United States in 1979 in Europe in 1978 and in Japan in 1982. The last notable console in this generation would be the Atari 5200 this console was only released in North America in 1982 as a follow up to the Atari 2600. From here remove to 3rd generation of video game consoles This is where most adults nowadays come into the video game world like my parents. When I talked to my dad about the first console, he truly remembered he talked about the NES or the Nintendo Entertainment System. With the Nintendo Entertainment System Nintendo brought around some of the most famous video game series that continue even to this day like Super Mario Bros. To put him to respective the popularity I’ve been tender entertainment system up to this point the most units sold for a console was 30 million for the Atari 2600 however the Nintendo Entertainment System demolishes that number at 61,910,000. From here we can jump to the 4th generation where we find the Sega genesis as well as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Both consoles continued to push the limits of video games even further with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System selling 49, 100, 000 units. Although he was not born until a few years later my friend still remembers first playing on a super Nintendo Entertainment System and playing the Mario franchise. He said that he feels that this is what truly began his hobby of gaming and made it to what it is today. This is also around the time where we begin to see handheld game consoles begin to be introduced like the original Gameboy by Nintendo introduced in 1989 which sold 118, 690, 000 units in 1990 Sega attempted to follow the success of the Gameboy but releasing the game gear which was their take on a handheld console however this did not take off as well as it only sold 10,620,000 units. From here we can move to the fifth generation of consoles at this point cartridges are a thing of the past and discs are the new way to go for playing your games. This generation sees the introductions of such consoles like the original PlayStation introduced in 1994 and the Nintendo 64 introduced in 1996 both of which Were very important to the time as they also revolutionized what could be done with the console. In this generation we also see handhelds like the Gameboy color which was revolutionary as before handheld consoles were solely in a shade of green whereas now, we had access to full color games. Jumping into the 6th generation of consoles we find the PlayStation two game cube and Xbox. This is the generation I first remember playing on as my first ever console was the PlayStation 2. I can still remember playing games like nick toons unite with my dad on our PlayStation. handhelds developed around this time would be the Gameboy advance and the game more advanced SP which featured a backlit screen meaning you could now play in dim lighting. Jumping into the 7th generation of consoles we meet the big three. The Xbox 360 PlayStation three and Wii. this generation brought a ton of new features including vibrating controllers and even motion controls with the Nintendo Wii. Handhelds from this time would be the Nintendo DS and the PSP or PlayStation portable now it’s even better technology we can make handheld games even more complex. From there remove into the 8th generation which contains the Wii u Nintendo switch PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The review was the successor to Nintendo’s we however came nowhere near the same sales numbers as it was seen almost as a step sideways on Nintendo’s behalf while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was just another step forward for Sony and Microsoft. however, this deficit before Nintendo was flipped around one in 2017, they launched the Nintendo switch. The Nintendo switch is a revolutionary console which can either be played handheld or placed in a dock and played on a TV like a traditional console. handhelds found in this generation be the Nintendo 3DS the Nintendo switch light which is a solely handheld version of the switch and the PlayStation Vita which was very similar to its predecessor the PSP. Finally, this brings us to the 9th and final generation of consoles in which we find the PlayStation five and the Xbox series S and series X. Both consoles bring on even more revolutionary improvements including faster speeds than ever and resolutions up to 4K just to name a few. Looking back, video games have come a long way since their inception over the past 49 years. Not only have billions of consoles sold throughout these years but new hobbies have been found families have been brought closer together and lifelong friends have been made all through video games.
